CALDO DE GALLINA (HEN SOUP), Acrylic on inherited woven textile, 2025, 19x 75 in

CALDO DE GALLINA (HEN SOUP) was conceived from a rumination on Latinx identity. Latinidad, understood as a marker of distance between Indigeneity and Whiteness, has never felt accessible to me as a Guatemalan and Black woman who is neither. Where representation and community acceptance lacked, food has acted as an access point that cannot be withheld. Through my mother’s hands, I can reach generations before me and appreciate decades of editing and perfecting. Recipes never written, yet so referential in their very nature.
