PLÁTANO (PLANTAIN), Acrylic on inherited woven textile, 2026, 24x 36 in

PLÁTANO is inspired by the work of Brazilian artist Antônio Henrique Amaral, who utilized bananas to speak out against the Brazilian totalitarian regime amidst censorship in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Bananas, Brazil's primary export at the time, became the subject of Amaral’s work. These overripe, mutilated bananas were symbolic of the Brazilian bodies during this time of political unrest. Brazil is often regarded as an outlier in Latin America due to its Portuguese colonial past and its high concentration of Black inhabitants. Plantains are a traditional staple in Guatemalan breakfast and are imbued with the nuances of Latinx identity.
